That moment I realized I was draining my car battery for no good reason

I used to let my car idle for like 10 minutes every morning before driving, thinking the engine needed to warm up nice and slow. Then my buddy who works at a garage saw me doing it in the parking lot and said modern cars don't need that at all, you're just burning gas and wearing stuff out. He showed me his own car starts moving right after the RPMs drop from cold start, which takes about 30 seconds. So I tried it for a week, zero issues and my gas bill dropped by like $12. Has anyone else been taught some car habit that turned out to be totally wrong?

Is that just how we all learn stuff... by finding out we've been doing it wrong the whole time?

Pretty sure my car thinks I was just preheating the garage for it with all that idling. Didn't even save on gas, just paid extra to air condition the driveway.

Laughing at "air conditioning the driveway" because that's totally what I'm doing too! Had to sit in my car for 15 minutes the other day just waiting for the AC to actually cool down before I could drive anywhere. Wish I would've just rolled down the windows and suffered for the first five minutes instead.
