The bakery near my old house started using frozen dough

I was back in my hometown last weekend and stopped by Miller's Bakery, the place I went to as a kid. They used to make everything from scratch, but now there's a sign saying they switched to pre-made frozen dough from a supplier in Ohio. The danish I got tasted exactly like the ones from the grocery store. Has anyone else noticed their favorite bakeries cutting corners like this?

Margaret, maybe frozen dough means more consistent quality for busy bakeries trying to keep prices down, not just cutting corners.

Wait, are bagels really something people microwave fresh daily? I had to stop and think about that for a sec because most bagels are boiled and baked, so microwaving them would just turn them into rubber. That said, I get why you're frustrated with the frozen dough thing. It is a bummer when a place quietly swaps ingredients and the quality drops off hard. But I think some bakeries mess up by using frozen dough that's just cheap and not great, not all of them. I've tried a few spots that use frozen dough from good local suppliers and they come out pretty decent actually, still way better than gas station stuff. The sign is definitely a little funny though, it does sound like they're trying to dress it up. But I'd rather a bakery be honest about using frozen dough than pretend everything's hand rolled when it's not. Honesty matters more than the sign copy.

Oh, a sign that says they're using frozen dough from Ohio... that's real artisanal there. Nothing says 'handcrafted' like a truck full of pre-made pastries from a warehouse in the Midwest." I had the same thing happen at a place near my house, they switched to frozen croissants and now they taste like the ones from the gas station. Next they'll be putting up a sign that says "our bagels are microwaved fresh daily.
