Tried a $10 oven thermometer after 2 years of burnt cookies and now I get why people swear by them

Right but did you calibrate it first though... I stuck mine in ice water the day I got it and it was off by 15 degrees and that explained a lot about why my cookies were still coming out weird even with a "good" thermometer. Now I check it every few months because those cheap ones drift like crazy once they get hot and cold over and over.

Calibrating is a waste of time if you ask me. @alice_palmer20, a 15 degree offset doesn't matter half the time because ovens cycle way more than that anyway. You're better off just watching your food and learning how your oven actually bakes than chasing some perfect number that changes every time you open the door.
