My old barber swore by clipper-over-comb for beards, I always thought it was a hack job

I fought him on it for months, saying guards gave a cleaner blend, but after messing up a fade last Tuesday I tried his method and it actually saved the cut. Who else has had a mentor push a technique that felt wrong but turned out solid?

Three weeks ago my mentor told me to stop using guards completely on lineups and just freehand the whole thing. I thought he was INSANE but after ruining three haircuts in a row I gave in. The thing is, clipper-over-comb lets you SEE the actual angle of the hair as it falls, not just the guard's fake line. My question for you is did your barber teach you the hand position where you twist the clipper slightly on the downstroke or just the basic straight pull? Because that twist is what makes the difference between a hack job and a solid blend.

12 barbers in my town and every single one has their own weird trick like that. It's funny how something that looks rough at first ends up working better than the textbook way. @olivia_allen that's probably safer than watching YouTube tutorials and ruining your beard on a Saturday night.

Tbh I trust my barber more than I trust myself with a pair of clippers.
