Kinda feels like you're taking one dude's offhand comment a little too seriously. People say stuff like that all the time without thinking.

Years back I had a buddy who built custom furniture. Really nice stuff. Someone told him his table was "good enough for a dorm room." He spent the next week sanding a single coat of lacquer off and redoing it. Sold it for less than the wood cost him. Sometimes you gotta decide if you're fixing the wheel for the customer or for your own pride. A Walmart bike comment would have me second-guessing everything I know about tension and dish. Might have to check the truing stand for level after that one.
