Question about the new bike lane design on 5th Avenue in Seattle
I noticed they used those raised plastic lane dividers that are only 4 inches tall, which seems like a great way to create a trip hazard for any cyclist who needs to swerve or a mechanic trying to do a quick road-side fix.

Those low dividers are actually a smart safety feature. They give a clear visual and physical border without being a major hazard for cars. If a cyclist does hit one, it's better to bump a soft plastic curb than a solid concrete barrier. The design forces drivers to pay attention while letting emergency vehicles cross over if needed. It's a decent middle ground that makes the lane feel protected without closing it off completely.

Reminds me of the time my buddy tried to open a paint can with a butter knife. Bent the knife all to hell and sprayed paint everywhere. Sometimes the right dumb tool is still the wrong tool.
