Appreciation post: Plain text email finally beat my fancy newsletter template

I spent 6 months building these elaborate HTML newsletters with images and buttons for my small bakery in Austin. Last month I switched to just a simple plain text email with a story about my sourdough starter and sales went up 30%. Anyone else find that less fancy actually works better for customer engagement?

Last month I sent out a plain text email that was just "bread is ready come get it" and sold out in two hours. My fancy template with photos and discount codes barely got a 5% click rate. Sometimes the simplest approach just feels more real to people.

bread is ready come get it" lol @casey16 that's literally poetry. I sent out a three line text once like "hey bagels are done, come early or cry" and my phone almost melted from the replies. Meanwhile I spent 3 hours on a newsletter with a moodboard and a discount code and got 2 opens from my own mom. Simpler hits harder every time I swear.
