Painted miniatures with cheap craft paint for 6 months straight

I finally caved and spent $12 on a single pot of Army Painter paint at my local shop in Portland. My goblins went from looking like cake frosting disasters to having actual detail. Turns out dollar store acrylic has no pigment and is basically glue water. Has anyone else ruined a whole squad before realizing the paint makes the difference?

Dunno, I've had okay results with cheap craft paints if you thin them right and use a decent primer. A $12 pot sounds like a lot for a hobby that's already expensive enough. Maybe your technique just got better over those 6 months and the paint swap was just a coincidence.

Ha, totally feel you on that @oliviat17! I had the same thing happen when I swapped from cheap craft paints to mid-range ones a couple years ago. My minis went from looking okay to actually decent almost overnight. The difference for me was the pigment load and how smoothly they lay down without needing three thin coats. I still use craft paints for terrain and bases though since they're cheap enough to mix wild colors without feeling guilty.
