Looked at my logbook and realized I've been on the tools for 22 years now.
It just hit me that I've been fitting and welding pressure vessels since before some of the new apprentices were even born. Anyone else get that weird feeling when you see a number that puts your whole career into perspective?

Nah, that number just feels like a trap to me. I never add up my years like that on purpose. Makes the job feel like a prison sentence instead of just what I do. I figure if you're still learning new things and the day goes by okay, then the time doesn't really matter. Getting hung up on the count just seems like a good way to make yourself feel old and stuck.

Totally get what mark361 is saying, it's just a number on a page. Feels like you're still doing good work, so who cares?

I hear you saying it's just a number, but for me, that count is a real record of what I've learned. It's not a trap like mark361 feels, it's proof I've stuck with something and gotten better. I'd miss that reminder of how far I've come.
