That's a cool trick... reminds me of how I overthink making toast sometimes. End up checking the bread color sixteen times and still burning it while the smoke alarm does its thing.

My smoke alarm basically counts as a kitchen timer at this point.

My old apartment had a smoke alarm so sensitive it would go off if you looked at the toaster wrong. The downstairs neighbor finally left a note on my door that just said "please stop cooking." I started unplugging it before making dinner, which is probably the opposite of a safety tip.
