My mechanic in Phoenix said he'd never work on anything but Ford trucks, even after his own F-150 left him stranded twice.

He just shrugged and said, 'They know me, I know them, and that's worth more than a perfect record,' which made me wonder if loyalty is really about the product or just the story we tell ourselves.

That line about "the story we tell ourselves" hits hard. It's like people who stick with a bad sports team their whole life. The losing seasons just become part of their personal history, proof they're a "real fan." The mechanic isn't buying a truck, he's buying into his own identity as a Ford guy. The flaws stop being problems and just become more chapters in his story.

Read a study once about how people stick with brands even when they're bad. It said our brains treat brand loyalty like being part of a tribe. So that Ford guy isn't just fixing a truck, he's defending his whole group. The study called it "identity justification," where arguing about your choice makes you believe in it more.

It's wild how we'll twist logic just to feel like we belong.
