I always bought the big bag of rice, but switching to a 5lb bag of lentils was the real win
The rice was cheaper per pound, but we got tired of it fast and ended up wasting some. The lentils cook quicker, and a single bag made three different dinners this week, like a soup and a salad. Anyone have other cheap staples that are actually versatile?

My local grocery store has a whole aisle of cheap staples that just sit there. I bought a giant sack of potatoes once because it was a "good deal," but half of them sprouted before I could figure out what to do. Now I grab a smaller bag of sweet potatoes. They roast faster, and I can mash them, put them in chili, or just bake one for lunch. It's less about the price per pound and more about what you'll actually use before it goes bad.

Spot the real cost after the price tag.

That's actually a solid strategy, but sweet potatoes do take a bit longer to cook than regular potatoes in my experience. Your point stands though, it's way smarter to buy what you'll actually get through.
