Just realized my cheap grocery store's bulk bin spices are way better than those little jars.
The bulk cumin was $0.89 for what would cost $4.50 in a jar. Game changer for my weekly chili. Anyone have other bulk bin wins?

What about bulk rice and dried beans? I switched over last year and the savings are crazy. My local store has bins for all kinds of grains too. It feels less wasteful since I only buy what I actually need.

That point about it being less wasteful is mostly true, but the bulk bins themselves can create a lot of plastic waste. I've seen so many people use those thin produce bags for every single item, which just gets tossed. If you're not bringing your own jars or cloth bags, the packaging waste just moves from the factory to the store. Doesn't that defeat some of the purpose? The real savings come from bringing your own containers from home.

Yeah, that's the real catch, isn't it? If people just grab a new plastic bag for each scoop, we're just making trash in a different aisle. The system only works if you actually reuse containers... but a lot of stores don't even let you bring your own stuff because of rules. So we end up stuck with the thin bags anyway. It feels like the idea is good but the habit hasn't caught up yet.
