My neighbor said to buy a whole chicken and break it down myself
She told me this last Tuesday, and I was sure it would be a messy waste of time. But I tried it at my place in Springfield, and the $8 chicken gave me two dinners, lunch meat, and a pot of stock. I was wrong to think the pre-cut packs were a better deal. Has anyone else found a simple tip that saved way more than you thought?

Read a blog post about this (it called whole chickens the "gateway drug" to real cooking). The savings are no joke.

Oh man, that "gateway drug" thing is so true. I got a whole chicken once because it was cheap, and next thing I knew I was trying to make my own stock from the bones. It was a huge mess, but it felt like a real win. I get why @hannahs45 goes for the cut-up ones though, that makes total sense for a busy night. For me, it's less about the savings now and more about feeling like I actually know what I'm doing in the kitchen for once.

My Springfield butcher sells cut-up chickens for just a dollar more, saving me the hassle.
