Had a chat with a retired installer at a diner in Springfield

He told me he used to carry a small notebook and draw every attic layout he worked in, saying 'your memory will fail, but a sketch won't.' I've always just taken mental notes. This week I got turned around in a tight crawlspace and his advice hit different. Do any of you keep physical notes or maps for tricky jobs?

Ever try a voice memo instead of writing?

Yeah, I use them for first drafts all the time.

Plus you can catch so much more of the natural flow of your thoughts that way. I've found that when I try to write something down from scratch, I end up overthinking and losing the raw energy of the idea. Dictating lets me just ramble for five minutes and then pull out the best parts later.
