Had a chat with a retired repair guy at a garage sale last weekend...

He told me most of these old Nikon F2 shutters die because people store them with the mirror locked up, and that basically kills the spring tension over time. Has anyone else heard that, or was this guy just an old timer blowing smoke?

Wait I thought you were supposed to store them with the mirror locked up if you're not using them for a while? I heard the opposite actually - that storing them with the shutter cocked is what kills the spring tension. Had a buddy who collected old Nikons and he always said to leave them uncocked in a dark dry place. So this guy might have been half right but mixed up which part does the damage.

1970s F2 shutters definitely lose tension if stored cocked.
