Talked to a park ranger about tent stakes and felt dumb
Ran into a ranger at Great Smoky Mountains last weekend who said my cheap aluminum stakes were basically useless in rocky soil. He showed me these 8 inch steel ones he carries and now I'm rethinking my whole kit. Anyone else had their gear assumptions wrecked by someone who actually knows better?

Traded my aluminum stakes for some cheap heavy duty ones at a hardware store after a night of bent stakes in the Rockies. Those thin ones just don't cut it in rocky dirt, the extra weight is worth not waking up with a collapsed tent.

Read a review that said same thing about those thin stakes bending in hard ground.
