That old timer at REI who changed how I pack my tent

I was standing in the REI in Portland last summer trying to figure out why my tent bag was so bulky. This guy in his 70s walks over, looks at my stuff sack, and just says "you're rolling it wrong." He showed me how to fold the poles flat first and lay the fabric on top instead of just cramming it in. My pack freed up like 4 inches of space after that. Has anyone else had some random stranger teach them a better way to pack gear?
