Honestly, the whole J.K. Rowling situation feels different from the Kevin Hart thing to me
Tbh, I saw both of them get called out online but the reactions were night and day. J.K. Rowling keeps tweeting stuff about trans people and people keep arguing whether it's harmful or just her opinion. But Kevin Hart made old homophobic jokes, apologized, stepped down from hosting the Oscars, and people still wanted more. Ngl, I feel like one person is doubling down and the other tried to move on, but the public treated them the same way. Is cancel culture about the person's response or just the offense itself?

Nah I kinda see it the opposite way honestly. Kevin Hart got dragged because he had a pattern of saying that stuff even after he got famous, but he did try to apologize and move on. J.K. Rowling is basically daring people to cancel her and gets defended way more than Hart ever did. Feels like people are way more willing to give her a pass for doubling down.

Heard a podcast breakdown recently that pointed out how Rowling uses her platform to basically go after trans people directly, not just state opinions. Kevin Hart's jokes were lazy homophobic stuff from his standup, but he wasn't targeting a specific group with that same energy over and over. The difference is Hart got hammered by the media cycle real quick, while Rowling gets defended by big publishers and politicians who say shes just "protecting women." Feels like money and status buy a LOT more forgiveness these days.

Hart actually apologized a bunch before the Oscars blowup though.
