A random coffee chat in Chicago made me rethink my whole job search

I was at a tech meetup in Chicago about six months ago, just talking to a guy about his work. He said something simple like 'I just tell people what I can fix for them, not what my job title is.' That stuck with me. I stopped sending out the same old resume and started writing short notes about the specific problems I've solved. My call-back rate went from maybe 1 in 20 to 1 in 5. Has anyone else tried pitching their skills this way instead of just listing past jobs?

I read something similar about focusing on outcomes over duties. It just makes way more sense to me.

Yeah, it's almost like companies want to know what you can actually do for them. Who knew?

My last boss hired me because I listed three ways I saved money, exactly like @robinp72 said.
