I started turning my camera on for every single work meeting

Honestly, my company went fully remote in 2020 and for the first couple years I kept my camera off 90% of the time. I figured it didn't matter as long as I got my work done. Then, about six months ago, I decided to try an experiment and turn my camera on for every single internal call, even the quick 15-minute check-ins. Ngl, I expected it to be draining and maybe a little pointless. The weird thing is, the opposite happened. People started remembering my name more in cross-department projects, my manager mentioned my 'increased presence' in my last review, and I got pulled into a couple of cool initiatives I'm sure I would have been overlooked for before. It felt like I went from being a name on a Slack list to an actual person on the team. I'm not saying you need to do it, but has anyone else noticed a real difference in how they're perceived at work just from being more visible on video?

Did you ever have that moment where you realized your camera-off profile pic was just you squinting at the sun from 2017? That was me. I finally turned mine on and my boss was like "oh, you have a beard now." I guess I'd been a chinless ghost for three years. It's wild how much just showing your face changes things, even if you're just sitting there nodding with bedhead.

Disagree, that sounds like extra unpaid emotional labor to me.

Ugh, @piperb93 is so right. That's just more work dumped on you for free.
