Spent $300 on a 'career coach' who told me to talk to my houseplants

I was desperate for direction after a layoff. The guy's big advice was to practice my elevator pitch on my ferns. Total waste. Anyone have a real tip for getting unstuck?

Wait, he seriously told you to talk to your ferns? I mean, I talk to my trees sometimes but that's just me.

What finally got me moving after my own layoff was just picking one small thing to do each day. I'd update one part of my resume, or message one old coworker to catch up. Instead of a big scary goal, it was just "today I'll research three companies." Those tiny wins built up and made the whole thing feel less impossible.

Huh, I mean I get the logic but isn't that kind of like making a tiny to-do list instead of the big scary one? Idk, for me after getting laid off I needed to just jump in and do a bunch of stuff at once. The small steps thing just made me feel like I was spinning my wheels. I'd do my one little task and then spend the rest of the day feeling guilty I wasn't doing more. Maybe it's just me but I think sometimes you gotta rip the bandaid off and tackle the whole resume overhaul in one go, even if it sucks. All those small wins never added up to real momentum for me, they just felt like checking boxes off a list that never got shorter.
