I used to think a 4-foot level was fine for everything until a kitchen remodel in Austin
I was setting cabinets and kept getting a tiny gap at the end of the run, even though my short level said they were dead on. My buddy brought over his 8-foot level and showed me the whole wall had a slight bow over the long span. What's the longest level you guys actually keep on your truck for stuff like that?

Why even bother with a giant level? Most walls are fine and you can just shim as you go. An 8-footer is a pain to store and costs a fortune. I've done tons of installs with a good 4-foot level and a straight edge. Just check in multiple spots and trust the process. Carrying around a ladder-sized level for one bowed wall seems like overkill.

Rented an 8-footer once for a really bad basement wall, and it saved the day. Sometimes you just need to see the whole picture at once.

Guess you've never hung a full sheet of plywood or a long cabinet. A four foot level on an eight foot wall is just guessing. Sure, you can patchwork it together. Or you can get it right the first time. Renting one for twenty bucks beats a day of shimming and cussing. Different tools for different jobs.
