I spent $80 on a 'cold brew' kit that was just a fancy jar

Last fall, I saw an ad for a special cold brew system that promised cafe quality at home. It looked great, with a glass carafe and a fine mesh filter. I ordered it online for about eighty dollars. When it arrived, I was so excited to try it. But after making my first batch, I saw it was just a big jar with a filter basket you drop in. The coffee was okay, but I could have made the same thing with a regular pitcher and a cheesecloth bag for maybe ten bucks. I feel silly for not looking into it more before buying. Has anyone else bought a coffee gadget that turned out to be a total letdown? What should I look for next time?

Wasn't a French press just a plunger and a beaker to start with? That's kind of its whole thing.
