My buddy swore I was crazy for using a burr grinder on cold brew, but I tried his blade grinder method once and ended up with muddy sludge that took forever to filter through.

He keeps saying blade grinders are fine for cold brew since it steeps so long, but after that one batch took 45 minutes just to drip through my Hario I'm going back to my Baratza Encore, anyone else find blade grinders just make a mess with cold brew?

Get that Baratza back in action, you made the right call. I mean, yeah, the long steep time means you don't need a perfect grind, but blade grinders just make too much dust and those tiny fines will choke your filter every time. Even with a paper filter, I still got a ton of silt when I tried my old Krups blade grinder for cold brew, and the cleanup was way worse than just rinsing out my French press.

Ha! I feel that so hard. My first cold brew batch came out looking like muddy swamp water because I was too cheap to buy a real grinder.

I mean honestly, I think the biggest mistake I ever made was thinking my blade grinder was fine for cold brew because "it steeps so long it'll all come out even." That's what I told myself until I spent an hour cleaning silt out of my French press and had coffee that tasted like someone burned toast in a mud puddle. Idk man, maybe it's just me but I'd rather deal with a slightly uneven grind from my Encore than that sludge nightmare again. My buddy still swears by his blade grinder, but he also uses Folgers in a Mr. Coffee so I've learned to take his advice with a grain of salt.
