My French press cage cracked mid-press and sent glass everywhere

Bought a 34 oz Bodum from a thrift store in Portland last Tuesday and the metal mesh cage just gave out on the third use, glass shards shot right into my mug and the counter. I was making my usual 6 AM pour and the whole thing sounded like a lightbulb popping, I barely caught the handle before it hit the sink. Anyone else had a press fail like this and switched to a different brew method for good?

That 6 AM pop is exactly what happened to me two winters ago with my old press, I had just poured the hot water in and the whole cylinder shattered while I was standing right there. I spent the next hour picking tiny glass slivers out of my slippers and off the kitchen tiles, it was honestly scary how far they flew. I totally get why you'd hesitate to go back to a press after that close call, especially at that hour when you're still half asleep. I switched to a simple pour over cone after mine broke and honestly never looked back, it's way less stressful and I don't flinch every time I hear a crack sound now. Hope your hand is okay and that you find a method that doesn't give you that heart attack feeling every morning.

So did you actually find the pour over gives you the same kind of coffee taste, or is it more about just not being scared every morning? I keep thinking about switching but I'm worried the flavor won't be as rich.
