Overheard a barista say pour overs are just fancy drip coffee

I was at a shop in Portland last Tuesday and this barista told a customer that pour overs are basically drip coffee with extra steps and more cleanup. It got me thinking about whether the ritual aspect is really worth the time or if we're all just fooling ourselves. Has anyone else heard a coffee pro say something that made you question your whole routine?

Heard a shop owner say the same thing in Seattle last month. Made me rethink my whole setup too.

Jump off that point about the ritual aspect, because I think that's where this whole thing lives or dies. The extra cleanup is absolutely real, I've got a V60 sitting in my sink right now that I should have washed two hours ago. But there's something about taking those extra steps on a Sunday morning, pouring slow and watching the bloom, that makes the coffee taste better to me even if it's technically the same as a machine pour. It's like the difference between a frozen pizza and making one from scratch, the process changes how you experience the end result. Does the ritual actually improve the flavor or does it just trick your brain into thinking it's better than the drip pot you'd grab on a Tuesday?
