Had to choose between reballing a GPU for a client or just replacing the whole laptop motherboard. Went with the reball and it's been running solid for 4 months now.
Client brought in a gaming laptop with a dead GTX 1060. The board was getting power but no video from the dGPU. Quote for a used replacement motherboard was around $350, but I found a local shop that does BGA rework for $120. Took the gamble, they reballed the GPU chip, and I reassembled. Been checking in with the client every few weeks and no issues so far. For those who've done this, is a successful reball usually a permanent fix, or is it just buying time before it fails again? I've heard mixed things.

Running solid for 4 months" is a very short time. Reballs often fail again because the underlying board warp or heat issue is still there.

Four months is nothing for a reball.

Used to think reballs were just a bandaid fix, but seeing one hold up this long has me changing my mind lol.
