Switched from a full reimage to a targeted repair for a stubborn Windows 11 profile issue

Had a client in Austin with a corrupted user profile that kept crashing Explorer. My first instinct was always to just wipe and reload the OS to save time (maybe 2 hours of hands-on work). But this time I tried using the built-in 'FixWin' tool from the Microsoft PC Manager app to rebuild just the profile, which took about 45 minutes. It actually worked perfectly and saved all their local app data. When do you guys decide to do a targeted fix over a full reimage?

Honestly I'm still team reimage for most profile problems. That 45 minute fix sounds good until it fails halfway and you're back to square one. I've had those tools leave behind weird registry keys that cause issues months later. A clean Windows install is just more reliable long term, even if it takes a bit longer up front.

Used to love those quick fixes until I read what @marybaker mentioned about the leftover keys. Now I just reimage too, saves a headache later.

Yeah, I saw a tech blog post that broke down the leftover registry entries thing. They found some profile fix tools create temporary keys for the repair process, but then don't clean them all up properly. Those orphaned keys can mess with group policy or cause random login delays later on. It's exactly why a fresh start feels safer.
