Rant: I used a 2x4 instead of a magnesium float on a small patio pour in Fresno and the finish came out way too rough.
The homeowner wanted a broom finish anyway, so it worked out, but has anyone else ever had to improvise like that when a tool broke on site?

Oh man, all the time. Once had to use a piece of plywood as a screed when the real one snapped. Looked awful, but it got the slab flat.

That's the real world right there. Sometimes you just have to make it work with what you've got. A flat slab beats a pretty tool any day.

Honestly, been there too. I once used a long 2x4 as a straight edge when my level was busted. It was rough but it did the job just fine.
