Rant: the job site trailer in Tulsa had a tablet taped to a cinder block and it ran the whole pour
Was on a commercial pour in Tulsa 2 weeks ago and walked into the site trailer to find a $70 Android tablet duct taped to a cinder block, running the batch plant tickets and slump logs for 40 trucks of concrete. No case, no mount, no charger even, just a zip tied USB cord running to a power strip that also had a coffee maker and a space heater on it. The finisher foreman shrugged and said the "fancy" ruggedized unit they bought for $1,800 got left in a truck bed in the rain back in April, so he grabbed this thing at a Walmart on a lunch run. What got me is it actually worked, the tickets synced to the office, the inspector signed off on it, nobody complained. Meanwhile our supers are walking around with $900 phones in OtterBoxes they still manage to crack every other job. Maybe the trick is just not caring if the thing survives. So is anybody else running cheap tablets as throwaway field units, or is my crew just built different?
Had a framer buddy who taped his phone inside a ziplock bag to a 2x4 so he could watch YouTube tutorials while nailing off. The bag fogged up, he couldn't see anything, but he just kept going off sound alone. Trimmed out the whole house like that. Pretty sure the lesson is the same, the tool only has to be as tough as you are careless with it.
