I had to pick between a fancy mic and fixing my lighting setup

My old ring light died right before I was supposed to film a new video series. I had $300 saved and had to choose between buying a new Shure SM7B mic everyone talks about, or getting two new softbox lights and a backdrop. I went with the lights. The first video I shot with the new setup looked so much cleaner, and my audience immediately commented on how professional it looked. Has anyone else found that better lighting made a bigger difference than a gear upgrade you thought you needed?

Totally agree about the lighting, my old webcam looked way better after I finally got a decent lamp.
