Swapped from a 60 ton to a 100 ton on a hospital job last Wednesday
Picking the bigger rig for lifting those steel beams felt like driving a truck versus a go-kart. The extra stability and reach saved us a full day on the schedule. Anyone else find that going up a size pays off more than you'd expect?

That bigger machine made all the difference on a job I ran a few months back. We were setting some pretty hefty HVAC units on a school roof and the 60 ton we had booked was going to require multiple picks and a lot of crane repositioning. The rental yard talked us into the 80 ton and it was like night and day. One smooth setup and we were done by lunch when we thought it would take all day. You don't realize how much that extra capacity matters until you're up on the roof watching the boom reach out without straining. The stability especially in the wind was a huge bonus too.

Isn't it funny how we get stuck in our ways thinking a certain size is all we need? I used to be the guy who would always just book the bare minimum spec and figure we could make it work. It felt like the smart financial move at the time, you know? But then I had a similar experience on a big commercial roof job where a middle-sized machine was just struggling and making everyone nervous. The rental guy talked me into the next size up and honestly, I felt pretty dumb for not doing it sooner. It really changed my whole view on machine selection for tight jobs.
