My character had a lucky rabbit foot and I wrote her into a corner

I tried a writing prompt about a detective who finds a lucky rabbit foot at a crime scene. I thought it would be a cool supernatural twist, but after 8 chapters my character was just winning every coin flip and guess. It killed all the tension because nothing bad ever happened. I learned that luck needs limits or your story falls flat. Has anyone else had a gimmick that backfired on them mid draft?
