Heard a sysadmin at the coffee shop say most people ignore firmware updates

I was grabbing a latte this morning and this guy next to me was complaining on the phone about a company that never updated their router firmware for 3 years. He said thats how most breaches start, just people thinking updates are optional. Made me wonder, how often do you guys actually check your home router firmware or just let it slide like everyone else?

Honestly, that "just thinking updates are optional" line really hits. I feel like that mindset is everywhere now, not just with tech but with everything we ignore thinking it'll be fine. People treat convenience like it's a safety net until something actually breaks.

Two years ago I ignored my car's check engine light for three months and ended up paying $1,200 for a transmission rebuild that a simple sensor fix would've prevented. That's exactly what @milesj70 is getting at - we keep pushing things off because fixing them now feels like a hassle, but it always costs more later. The scary part is how this habit sneaks into bigger stuff like ignoring weird noises at home or skipping doctor visits, and we tell ourselves it's fine until the floor rots or the cough won't go away.

@wyatt_green31 ever find yourself ignoring that weird sound your fridge makes for months?
