Burned my first batch of onion rings so bad I had to open all the windows

Last Saturday I was in my tiny kitchen trying to impress my buddy with homemade onion rings. I got the oil too hot because I was messing with my phone and the batter turned black in like 30 seconds. Smoke was everywhere and my smoke alarm wouldn't shut up for ten minutes. Had to air out the whole apartment and order pizza instead. Anyone else had a deep fry mishap that made them swear off multitasking?

Black.pat, I bet that was like an ashtray mixed with a barbecue pit. Had to be enough to clear the whole house out.

Did you at least get a good story out of it, @black.pat? I tried making donuts once and left the oil on high while I answered a text. The oil caught fire and I had to throw baking soda all over the stovetop. My kitchen smelled like burnt sugar and regret for two weeks.
