Question about a weird injector knock on a 6.7 Powerstroke

Had this truck with a knock that sounded like a rod but only at idle. After checking everything, I tried backing off each injector line nut one at a time with the engine running. The noise stopped when I cracked the line on cylinder 3, so I swapped that injector with a spare. Fixed it in twenty minutes, saved the guy a teardown. Anyone else used that old school trick lately?

Ever think about what makes an injector start knocking like that in the first place. Was it a bad internal part or maybe some trash in the fuel that wrecked it. Could the guy have a bigger fuel system problem that killed that injector.

My old truck had a knock I swore was a bad injector. Turned out to be a tiny piece of the fuel filter media that broke loose and got stuck in the line. @shaneb16 is right to ask about trash in the fuel, because that's exactly what got me. I used to just swap parts first, but that mess taught me to check the whole system. Now I always look for the root cause, or you'll just kill the new part too. It's usually something simple that gets overlooked.

Classic case of fixing the symptom and not the cause. People jump straight to the worst case scenario now instead of doing the basic checks first.
