I bought a cheap drawing tablet and it cost me more than money
I got a no-name tablet for $40 online thinking it would be fine for starting digital art. The pen pressure was awful and it stopped working after about two months. I lost not just the $40, but also the hours I spent on three unfinished pieces that got messed up. I had to buy a proper tablet anyway, so it was a total waste. Now I tell every new artist to save up for a known brand, even a basic one. What's the worst piece of gear you've bought that held you back?

Kills your motivation" sounds a bit dramatic, doesn't it?

Jumped in with a $20 Amazon special my first time and spent more time trying to fix audio artifacts than actually recording anything. Took me a solid month to realize the pop filter was basically just a sock taped to a wire hanger. So yeah, cheap gear can absolutely ruin the fun before you even get started.

My first cheap mic was a $30 USB thing that picked up every computer fan like a jet engine. The real cost was the mental energy of editing out that constant buzz for every single recording. It made me hate the process so much I almost quit podcasting before I even started. That kind of gear doesn't just fail, it actively kills your motivation to practice and improve. I learned the hard way that bad tools can make you hate the hobby itself.
