Spent $300 on a 'pro' digital brush pack that looks like crayon scribbles
Bought this fancy set last month because the ad said 'industry standard for concept art.' Opened it up in my software and half the brushes just make weird, lumpy lines. My buddy looked at a test sketch and said, 'Did your kid get on your tablet?' Anyone know a good, simple brush set for character sketches that actually works?

That whole "industry standard" marketing line gets slapped on everything now, doesn't it? It's like buying expensive kitchen gear that just sits in the drawer. Honestly, for clean character sketches, you can't beat the basic round brush and a simple flat. Most of the pros I know just tweak the default brushes that come with the software. All the fancy packs are just noise.

Spot on about the kitchen gear comparison. Makes me wonder how many of those "pro" brush pack sellers are actually working artists versus just good at marketing. What specific tweaks do the artists you know usually make to the default round brush? Is it just adjusting the spacing and transfer, or something else entirely?

Exactly. It's the same in every hobby now, just a lot of fancy stuff you don't need. Most of the time the simple tools work the best anyway.
