Vent: I used to spend hours on hyperdetailed backgrounds nobody noticed

For like two years I would put 15+ hours into these crazy detailed cityscapes for my character art. Then last month I posted a piece with just a simple gradient and some shadow blobs in the background and it got three times the engagement. I mean, maybe it's just my audience but I feel like the time split was totally off. Has anyone else had to cut back on background polish to keep their sanity?

Oh man, I once spent a whole weekend rendering individual bricks on a wall only to realize later it was gonna be 90% obscured by a character's hair.

Did you ever try just hiding the background with a character's hair on purpose?
