Appreciation post: A retired carpenter at the hardware store in Boise saved my door frame project

He saw me staring at the shims for 10 minutes and said 'kid, the gap's an eighth, use two blue ones and tap 'em flat.' Has anyone else gotten a perfect piece of advice from a total stranger like that?

Honestly @quinn968, you don't tap shims flat, you tap them in until they're snug.

Ever try to cut a board with a butter knife? That was me before a guy at the lumber yard showed me how to hold a handsaw. Some people just have a gift for explaining things.

Tap 'em flat" is the kind of simple advice you remember for years.
