Update: my bathroom sink drain pipe cracked last night
I was washing my hands around 10pm and heard a weird drip under the vanity. Pulled out the bucket and saw water coming from a hairline crack in the pvc elbow. I shut off the water, ran to the hardware store before it closed at 11, and grabbed a new elbow and some cement. The old one was super brittle, probably from being 15 years old. Has anyone else had a pvc joint just give out like that?

Happens all the time with old PVC. The cement they use to join it actually makes the plastic brittle over the years. Next time, get a slip joint coupling too, it makes the swap way easier if you have to cut the pipe.

Turns to chalk" is HORRIFYING, I've never had one fail that bad. @william_carter your kitchen sink story just made me paranoid about all my old plumbing now.

Yeah, that late night hardware store run is the worst. Been there with a hot water line that decided to fail at midnight. @matthewkim is totally right about the cement making the PVC brittle, it's like the whole joint just turns to chalk. I had to replace a whole section under my kitchen sink last year because the old glue joints were so stiff and cracked at the slightest touch. Makes you want to just replace all the old stuff before it surprises you.
