Found a trick for patching drywall that actually saved my sanity
I spent last weekend fixing a hole the size of my fist in the living room wall. Tried the mesh tape and compound method, but it kept bubbling up on me. Switched to using a fiberglass patch kit from Ace Hardware for $12, and it set flat in about 20 minutes after pressing it down with a drywall knife. Anyone else had better luck with those patch kits over regular tape?

Yeah the mesh tape is such a pain, I gave up on it after my third try and just went with one of those self-adhesive patch kits from Lowe's. Worked way better for me, stuck right on and I didn't have to fight with bubbles for an hour.

Just sand down the flaky parts first, makes a huge difference.

That self-adhesive patch kit sounds like a different approach altogether. I'm curious though, did you have to do anything special to prep the wall before you stuck it on? The last time I tried one of those, I ran into trouble because my wall had some old paint that was a little flaky, and the patch didn't hold for more than a week before it started peeling at the edges. Maybe I'm just not patient enough with the surface prep part.
