Patched a hole in drywall but the texture came out way rougher than the wall around it

I used a spray can of orange peel texture on a living room patch last weekend and it looks like a golf ball compared to the original wall. Any tips on blending texture so it doesn't stick out so obvious?

Actually my experience with the damp sponge trick is that it can make things worse if you push too hard... it smears the texture flat instead of just knocking the peaks down. I've had better luck waiting 24 hours for the texture to fully cure, then using a drywall sanding sponge with 120 grit and just barely grazing the surface. That way you take off the actual roughness without flattening the pattern into a muddy mess.

You're overthinking this. The spray can texture is almost always too thick and heavy. What you need to do is apply it from further away and use lighter passes. Hold the can at least 18-24 inches from the wall and mist it on in short bursts. Let each layer dry for a minute before adding more. The mistake most people make is trying to match the texture in one heavy coat. Also, after it dries you can take a damp sponge and lightly dab the high spots to knock the roughness down. That little trick will save your patch job every time. Just go slow and build it up gradually.
