Vent: People keep using regular drywall screws for outdoor projects and it drives me nuts.

I saw a neighbor's new cedar planter box already rusting after one rain because he used standard screws, not the coated ones that cost maybe $2 more a box.

Seems like a pretty minor thing to get worked up about.

Define "minor" for me.

Wait, he actually used regular drywall screws on a cedar planter box? That's like using paper towels to clean up a gas spill, you know it's gonna fail before you even start. I've seen those standard silver screws turn into a rusty mess so fast, they'll stain the cedar orange and leave streaks down the side of the planter after one rain. The stuff inside the planter will probably leech rust into the soil too, which can't be great for the roots. At least he saved like a buck fifty on the wrong screws, I guess, but now he's gonna be kicking himself when he has to rebuild the whole thing next spring.
