Chat with a retired pipefitter about isometric drawings changed how I work

Old guy at the diner told me to stop using the paper edge as a straight line, said real drafters use a dedicated ruler for every axis. He was right, my 60 degree lines stopped wobbling after 2 days. Anyone else get a weird tip from an old-timer that stuck?

Wow really? I gotta push back on that one. I honestly think using the paper edge is fine for most rough sketches. The old-timer's trick works for finished drawings but for quick field markups who's stopping to find a straight edge? I've done thousands of isometrics with just a pencil and the paper edge and my 60s come out clean. Maybe your old guy had shaky hands or something.

Honestly, isn't it more about getting comfortable with your own hands than the method? I've seen guys swear by the paper edge and their stuff comes out perfect every time, while others just can't make it work.

My buddy Tom tried this paper edge method on a job site once and his 60 degree line ended up looking more like a 45. His foreman walked by, took one look at the sketch, and just handed him a triangle straight from his vest pocket without saying a word.
