Overheard a guy in a workshop saying hot air rework stations are overkill for most board repairs
I was at a parts counter in Portland last Wednesday picking up some caps and this older repair guy starts talking to the clerk about how he fixes nearly everything with just a soldering iron and flux, no hot air gun. He said something like 'if you need hot air for a simple capacitor swap, you're compensating for bad technique' and it really made me think about how much gear I've bought that I barely use. Has anyone else scaled back their repair kit and found they actually do better work with less?

Man, my hot air station's just a fancy paperweight since I realized I can't aim it without melting something lmao.

Yeah @hugo_schmidt it's funny how much everyday stuff feels like that hot air station. I notice it a lot with my coffee grinder where I spend more time adjusting than actually grinding. Tools have this way of making you feel like you're one knob twist away from perfection but you're really just chasing your tail. Same with my soldering iron actually, I keep buying tips thinking the next one will fix everything but it's usually me not knowing what I'm doing. Maybe half the battle is just accepting that some things are gonna get melted and moving on.
