A client in Boise once told me my clinches looked like 'a blind bear did them' and I've used a different hammer ever since.

Switched to a 12 oz. hammer with a narrower face after that comment and my finish work got way cleaner, anyone else have a tool change that fixed a specific flaw?

A magazine article said the wrong hammer face can cause glancing blows and mess up your finish. @olivia_harris19 is right about a smooth face helping a lot. I found a 14 oz. curved claw with a milled face gave me better nail set without chewing up the wood.

Honestly, I was so sure a bigger hammer meant more control. Then I kept bending nails on trim. Switched to a 16 oz. straight claw with a smooth face and it just... connects better. My swing got lighter and straighter.

Ever try a wooden handle or is that just asking for vibration problems?

Switched to a wood handle years ago. The shock absorption is way better than fiberglass, no more tingly hands after a long day.
