Vent: Why does everyone push oversized blazers like they're the only option?

Last month at a fabric swap in Portland, a woman in her 60s told me she refuses to wear any jacket that isn't tailored to her exact frame because anything baggy makes her feel like she's wearing a costume. She pulled out a vintage wool blazer she'd altered herself over 20 years ago, and it fit her like a glove. Has anyone else had someone challenge the trend directly to your face and make you rethink your whole approach?

Did you ever notice how some people just kinda "own" their style no matter what's trendy? That woman at the fabric swap sounds like she's been dressing for herself for decades, not for some magazine. My grandma had a tweed jacket she wore to church every Sunday for like 25 years, and she'd just patch the elbows when they wore thin instead of buying something new. I think that kind of long-term relationship with a piece of clothing says more than any trendy blazer ever could.

costume" yeah that's exactly what my friend said about her daughter's wedding. She found a boxy blazer from the 90s and I told her it was trendy and she just laughed at me. Said she looked like a kid playing dress up.

...and honestly that's exactly why I ended up just going with a classic fit and flare dress for my cousin's wedding last spring. I tried on so many trendy pieces and every time I looked in the mirror I felt like I was playing a game of "what decade am I from?"... The blazer thing especially, it just hangs wrong on most people unless you've got the perfect build for it. What finally worked for me was finding a simple sheath dress in a deep navy, something that didn't fight my body or scream "look at this cool vintage piece." It had a little bit of structure but wasn't stiff, and I didn't spend the whole night adjusting it or wondering if I looked like a kid raiding their mom's closet. Sometimes playing it safe is the smartest way to go, you know?
