Just compared two ways to keep hydrangeas from wilting in a delivery van

Used to just wrap stems in wet paper towels for a 20 minute drive. Last week, tried putting them in a bucket with an inch of cool water instead. The bucket ones looked perfect, the towel ones were already drooping by the time I got there. The water kept the stems from sealing up in the heat. Anyone have a better trick for longer summer routes?

Yeah I always thought the wet towel trick was solid. That bucket idea is a game changer though, makes total sense about the stems.

Totally agree, the bucket is next level. The wet towel thing works okay for a quick fix, like if you just bought some herbs at the store and need them to last the night. But standing them in water in a bucket or a big cup, that's the real deal for keeping them crisp for days. I had some parsley go a full week that way once. It just mimics how they grow, you know? Stems are meant to drink.

So the towel was basically a thirst trap.
